Shadow and Bones
1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence. Highlight your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons. 

The TV show begins with an establishing shot of a ship where we slowly zoom in using a crane shot. We are given close ups of the maps drawn and a low angle close-up of the main characters face. There are multiple medium shots of the other characters with a handheld feeling. Near the end there is a wide shot of the Mc which slowly moves around and becomes an over the shoulder shot and long shot showing the setting.

2) How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?

Through the use of handheld camera work, it gives the audience a more realistic feel to the setting they've been placed into. The multiple wide shots also show dark sky's to reinforce the ideas of danger within the path they are traveling through. The narrative can easily be depicted through the establishing shot of 'The fold' where the characters intend to cross such a risky area. The vast medium shots of Alina communicated how she is one of the main characters.

Secondly, find and analyse one film or TV still image. Add the image to your blogpost. 


3) Analyse the camera shot/angle in the image and what it communicates to the audience. Remember to highlight the media terminology you use.

In this photo we are given a wide shot to exaggerate this characters importance and to show the setting. This is able to clearly show the characters actions in the TV show and the type of person they are. This is also a low angle shot as it presents this character as powerful through the low tilt. It also communicates their importance as a character.

Mise-en-scene

    1) Find a distinctive   still image   and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.  The women is seen to be wearing a wedding dress as if she is about to get married or has just made her vows. The colour of white can connote her innocence and youth as wedding are seen as sacred. However the props of a gun and bullet contrast with this idea as they appeal the thought of violence and destruction. This harsh difference highlights how an unexpected event has caused for the bride to have become a solider at war. The setting show a dim living room lit by candles to reveal the genre of horror or thriller. This lighting is able to outline her messy hair and show her torn and dirtied dress. Her make-up seems to be purposely been created to be dark, smudged and quite dirty looking to reflect her hardship she might have gone through or an unexpected event that has occurred making her emotionless and perhaps traumatised. Lighting blog tasks

  1) Still image analysis Look at the still images on slides 33-37 of the Film Language Powerpoint linked above. Copy the images into your blog and answer the following questions for  each  image: Identify examples of  high  and  low-key  lighting. Say which depict  top ,  back  or  under lighting . What  effects  are created by the lighting in each image?      Image 1:  This image shows a female with low key lighting and is includes both back and top lighting. This creates dramatic shadows across her face and is able to reveal the smoke released from her cigar. This lighting also covers the location reinforcing genre of mystery and crime. Image 2: This is low key with top lighting. This can suggest how the blackness is taking over as her facial features are the only part lit up. This can also show genre of noir from the female. Image 3: This image can be a mix of high and low key as there is a contrast on his face while there is soft lighting surrounding him to show how he is outdoors
