Mise-en-scene

1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

The women is seen to be wearing a wedding dress as if she is about to get married or has just made her vows. The colour of white can connote her innocence and youth as wedding are seen as sacred. However the props of a gun and bullet contrast with this idea as they appeal the thought of violence and destruction. This harsh difference highlights how an unexpected event has caused for the bride to have become a solider at war. The setting show a dim living room lit by candles to reveal the genre of horror or thriller. This lighting is able to outline her messy hair and show her torn and dirtied dress. Her make-up seems to be purposely been created to be dark, smudged and quite dirty looking to reflect her hardship she might have gone through or an unexpected event that has occurred making her emotionless and perhaps traumatised. Overall this female actor in this one still image subverts the traditional stereotypes created as she is a young girl wielding a gun for violence.

2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

In both 'Do Revenge' a hybrid of thriller and drama genre and 'Scream' a horror genre, they both share a school scene but are both distinctively different. 'Do Revenge' was filmed in 2022 and shows the students in customisable pastel uniform to make the audience more relaxed and calm. The main character is a strong female who subverts her given stereotypes and aims to reach her goals. The lighting is always bright and vibrant, never dark, whereas the makeup of each character is bold and funky reflecting the teenagers creative minds. On the other hand, in 'Scream' was filmed in 1996 where students are given more free will to wear what they want as each style imitates the characters personality. The lights are always yellow and the screen always has a tint of black not only due to how old the film is but to reinforce the genre of horror. The makeup is practically unnoticed to give it the natural and high school appearance, this is also shown through the props of multiple books and backpacks which are barely shown in 'Do Revenge'.
